Here is what I did (using PSE):

-Convert into B&W (portrait)
-Auto sharpen (which was an amazing discovery!)
-10% color burned
-Adjusted level and contrast

Camera:

-Canon Rebel Xti
-50mm lens
-1/4000 @ f-2.0
-Maunal
